Here’s another finished image from my Route 66 series. This is again one that I’ve posted previously, but I have refined the image and it is now ready to print large.
Hi Ben,
This is an amazing image. I really enjoy the colour treatment here with the structure standing out just a bit more than its surroundings, but in a very subtle and balanced way!
I like the green car front photo against the sky too. Not that it really matters, but I’m just curious if the sky is original in that photo? Either way I like the deep blue dark sky in that image. Is that achieved by taking some desaturating and darkening the blue in the sky?
Anyway, all the best with your printing and getting into galleries. Sounds like an interesting project, but the Route 66 images should definitely go down well many places.
Thomas,
All the skies are original (other than alternative color treatments), the only image that has a substituted sky is the Magnolia Station image and the replacement is a gradient that attempts to replicate the original since retouching to remove telephone poles caused it to look rough.
I will not reveal my technique on these images… it’s simple and straight forward, but I don’t want everyone copying the effect. All I can say is that it’s not fancy at all.
I’ll try to post more images as the week progresses. I have 12 images done and am 1/3 of the way to having enough images for a gallery show. I hope to have the rest ready by June.

Ben, that is a really fine photo in many ways both obvious and subtle. One the best you’ve posted here, I think.
Take care,
Dan
