How “safe” do you think this approach is for long-term compatibility? That is, if I archive photos as DNG->Smart Object->PSD (or DNG->Smart Object->TIFF) do you think I’ll need to migrate the files in 10 years or could they be supported for 15+ years?
I think it’s the Smart Object aspect I’m concerned about. I don’t have much concern for PSD or TIFF long-term.
I love this approach in theory but want to make sure I’m thinking it through.
Hi Joe,
I archive my original raw images immediately after shooting. They are stored on DVD and I could always replace the Smart Object Layer with a processed version of the raw file.
I don’t see how .PSDs that don’t use smart objects woule be safer. I don’t see Adobe removing the Smart Object capability from Photoshop, so I don’t see why we can’t open them years from now.
You’ll have to weigh the advantages/disadvantages of this setup in your own workflow, nothing is perfect for all situations.
