A week with my vintage bus

Posted by admin in Blog on December 10, 2012

Hi everyone! It’s time for another Monday travel update. Karen and I finally moved on from Portland and relocated to the Eugene, Oregon area. Eugene is just two hours south of Portland and it’s where my vintage bus will be getting its new interior installed. In case you’re not familiar with the project, I currently live in a modern motorhome/bus conversion but am currently restoring a vintage bus that we will eventually live in. The exterior will look vintage and the interior will feature a modern, streamline design style. To learn more about the project, check out the Creative Cruiser site.

This past week, we’ve actually had both buses parked together in paradise… well, Paradise Coach, that is. That’s the shop that will be doing the interior of the vintage bus. What’s funny is that we’re parked next to a beautiful Silverside coach, which is the other brand of vintage bus I was considering before I purchased my 1963 Flxible Starliner. The Silverside is in the final stages of restoration and when it’s complete, the gang here will be able to focus their attention on my bus.

I’ve spent a lot of time this past week planning out the interior of the bus. Having the vintage bus within 20 feet of my current bus makes it really convenient to do measurements and such. I would go back and forth between the bus and my computer so that I could create the 3D model of the bus’ interior. Then I would spend time researching the right appliances that would fit into the space. One of the tricky things about the vintage bus is that the roof is very curvy so any cabinets or appliances that have to be fitted on the ceiling take some extra consideration.

Above you can see part of my 3D model showing the kitchen area of the vintage bus.

Here I am getting measurements inside the vintage bus.

Aside from working on the vintage bus, Karen and I actually went to a few movies this week. The first was actually Pulp Fiction.  (yes, you heard that right) There was a one-day re-release of the film that included interviews and special trailers hand-picked by Tarantino. We both really like Tarantino flicks, and Pulp Fiction is pretty much a classic, so we had a blast. The second movie we saw was “Lincoln,” and it was equally enjoyable. The actors were all extremely impressive, especially Daniel Day Lewis, and the lighting was very well done. Karen and I would both recommend seeing it.

Finally, we met some fellow full-timers this week (meaning folks that also live on the road like we do). Steve and Kristen own a GM bus that had its interior done here at Paradise Coach. They’re back here for some maintenance things and we got some time to hang out and get to know each other. It’s always fun to see how other RVers do what they do. Steve and Kristen have their priorities set on hiking, climbing, biking and other outdoor-related activities, so they made that a priority when designing their lifestyle and their bus. The four of us went to dinner at Ubon Thai in Eugene and we just loved it. It’s run by a husband and wife team. The wife is the cook, and she’s straight from Thailand. Yum!

We’re most likely going to be spending the next week in the same area and I’ll be working more on the vintage bus and other projects. More to come…

Learning Encaustic and more fun in Portland

Posted by admin in Blog on December 3, 2012

This past week was our final week in Portland, at least for a while. We stayed parked there for quite some time… longer than we usually stay in one given spot. Part of this past week was focused on learning a new (to me) kind of art medium. While I’m used to teaching workshops, this time I was the student, and the medium was encaustic. Encaustic basically means art created with beeswax, and I had been wanting to learn it for a while. I had been looking for a new an interesting way to display my photos, and encaustic really spoke to me.

I signed up for a two-day workshop in Portland with Linda Womack. I learned about the different methods and tools, and ended up going home with a handful of finished pieces. It’s definitely something that is better to learn hands-on in a class rather than just out of a book. Lots of the techniques are tedious and must be done very fast, because the wax is constantly drying. Now that I have a solid foundation, I’m probably going to start buying supplies so that I can practice on my own.

Here I am working on one of my pieces in the encaustic workshop.

One of my Rt. 66 images that has been transferred to wax, but not fused yet.

Here, I experimented with pigments under the photo.

I guess this was just a classroom kind of week for us, because Karen also took a class on knife skills at Portland’s Sur La Table. She had a little rule for herself, and that was she couldn’t buy a GOOD, sharp knife until she took a knife skills class. (she has been known to be a tad accident prone in the kitchen) She ended up loving the class and buying a new chef’s knife and paring knife shortly after.

Karen shot this before her knife skills class in Portland.

Aside from the classes, we had a fairly low-key week, with a few fun distractions. One of our favorite things to do in Portland is see movies at the McMinnemin’s Brew Pub Theaters. They have slightly older movies and only charge $2-3 for admission. What’s even better is that you can have beer and wine in the theater as well as GOOD food. We’ve gotten Thai bowls, hummus, salads, etc. This week, we went to see the movie “Looper,” and both enjoyed it. We also got to meet up with my friend and fellow photography instructor Chris Hurtt. He’s a Portland local and we spent a bunch of time catching up at The Bye & Bye, another one of our favorite places in Portland. It’s a vegan bar, and the food is actually amazing!

On a completely different note, I was featured on Nik Radio this week, where in my interview, I talk with Scott Sheppard about Photoshop, photography and gear. If you’re not familiar with Nik Radio, here’s what they do:

Well, that’s all the news for this week. We’re now making our way south the the Eugene, Oregon area where my vintage bus will be getting its new interior. More to come…

East Coast fun & back to Portland

Posted by admin in Blog on November 26, 2012

I hope everyone had a good Thanksgiving week and weekend! We sure did. If you read my last post, you know that Karen and I spent the week of Thanksgiving in New Jersey with her family, and the week started with Karen’s bridal shower. It’s only about five weeks from now that we fly down to Hawaii to get married! Some of our time in NJ was spent arranging the final details of the ceremony and the trip in general.

Outside of Thanksgiving, we ended up having something else pretty major to celebrate this week. Karen’s sister, Laura, and her boyfriend, Rich, got engaged too! Karen and I were there when a very nervous Rich came to ask their dad for permission, and we were very anxious to hear from them after he popped the question. After all, Karen set the two of them up a while back, and we couldn’t be more excited for them!

The newly engaged Laura and Rich.

Karen’s dad with his two future son-in-laws! It was a night of heavy celebration, as you can see by the wine glasses.

It was very nice to have a traditional Thanksgiving with Karen’s [ever growing] family. They’re a really fun bunch, and they’re all very close. I know a lot of married guys talk negatively about the “in-laws” but to be honest, I’ve struck gold in that department. The family has an annual Thanksgiving tradition, and that’s to go around the dinner table and, one by one, say what you’re thankful for. I told them I couldn’t have dreamed up a better family to be entering into.

We took this photo right before dinner. From left is David, Joann and Tom (Karen’s parents), Karen, me, Laura and Rich.

After Thanksgiving dinner, we ended up playing a Wii game called “Just Dance” and it was insanely amusing. You’re supposed to follow along with the dancers on the screen, but that’s often very difficult so you end up looking a bit, um, stupid… to the delight of everyone around you! In the pic above, Karen’s parents try to keep up with a Blues Brothers song.

On Friday, Karen and I flew back to the bus, which is still parked in the Portland, OR area. We were glad to be in the air while the rest of the country was in the Black Friday shopping frenzy. The next night, we went to a movie at a historic, art deco-style theater called Kiggins. It’s actually in Vancouver, Washington, a short drive from Portland. What’s funny is that the movie we saw was “Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure!” Karen had never seen it and it had been years since I’d seen it. It was definitely an interesting way to spend the night!

For the next week, we’ll probably still be hanging around in the Portland area. More to come…
